Harlequin Duck Histrionicus histrionicus
Often known simply as Harlequin.
There were six here, but I probably didn't capture all six in my photos.
Harlequin Ducks, Clover Point, Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada), 12th September 2006
Harlequin is a rare vagrant in the UK, the vast majority of records coming from the north of Scotland. I saw the bird that over-wintered at Wick in early 1991 and then this one which happened to coincide with a visit to the Hebrides.
Harlequin Duck, Col, Lewis (Outer Hebrides, UK), 15th May 2004
I think this pair had over-wintered in Monterey Bay. They were seen at the start of a pelagic boat trip out into the bay.
Harlequin Ducks, Monterey Bay (California, USA), 30th April 2005
This was one of over 100 seen at this site.
